Athletes are humans who make mistakes

In 1993, Charles barkley caused a stir when he suggested that athletes shouldn’t be seen as role models in an iconic Nike ad campaign. “Just because I can dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should be raising your kids,” said the former NBA All Star. At the time, his comments had elicited mixed reactions, but the idea put forward by the now reckless TNT analyst and former basketball player now seems more prophetic than ever.

Over the past two weeks, we’ve seen a number of NFL stars find themselves embroiled in controversies involving poor judgment and drug addiction. Former Las Vegas Raider wide receiver Henri Ruggs III was involved in a car accident that left a 23-year-old woman and her dog dead. Prosecutors said the former University of Alabama star drove 156 mph, with a loaded handgun in the back seat, and had a blood alcohol level above double the legal limit.

When asked why he hadn’t been vaccinated, Rodgers said he was allergic to the ingredients in the vaccine, but he didn’t stop there. The quarterback was so concerned about the credibility of his story that he went on to question the effectiveness of highly effective vaccines, cough up misinformation, target the ‘awakened’ cancellation culture, and praised his anti-vaxxer colleague and podcast host. The mere fact that a cowardly, narcissistic football thrower thinks he is smarter than all the scientists and medical professionals in the world is problematic and reflects a much larger societal problem. Fans and the media are complicit in promoting a system that encourages bad behavior and exaggerated self-esteem in athletes.

We give these young celebrities millions of dollars and publicity and then we put a microphone in their face and ask them to comment on just about everything. These young men and women are unfortunately not qualified to provide general advice, let alone public health advice. By putting them on a divine pedestal, we interpret their athletic prowess for social, political and academic acuity.

If our favorite athletes hold beliefs similar to ours, we salute them as heroes. If they have beliefs that disagree with ours, we despise them and call them selfish. Regardless of the side, you are almost never surprised by the behavior of an athlete.

A common theme emerges: top performing athletes walk to the beat of their own drums, in part because we encourage them to do so by idolizing them. By removing the human element from our assessment of athletes and treating them as a kind of caricature of our expectations, we open the door to disappointment and the spread of misinformation.

Although we are normal humans like you or me, we the fans demand too much from our athletes. We expect them to be above reproach – to show grace that they win or lose, and to speak out eloquently on social issues far beyond the boundaries of sport and entertainment. before and after the matches. When they disappoint us, we overly criticize or overlook their mistakes based on the extent to which their transgressions violate our personal moral code.

The danger of elating celebrities

It’s easy to mistake athletes for role models, as the media has turned the sport into a male dominated reality show. The athletes are the protagonists and the owners of Lily White are the antagonists. TV and social media are turning game prep into a soap opera that makes those numbers very marketable. The media exploit our insatiable appetite for entertainment, making us ask more of our athletes than we should.

In a world where people like Rodgers are praised for their intellectual insight, based on his ability to dissect a defense and read questions about Danger, we need to re-evaluate why we consider people like him to be a better source of truth than more informed people like doctors and scientists. It’s a reasonable expectation for those who reach the pinnacle of the sports world to be honest and honorable citizens, but we have to recognize that they will be wrong more often than not, especially as we remove more layers and find out. their real self.

When we put athletes on a pedestal and inflate their importance, we ignore the evidence that they are incompatible with our moral compass. We find reasons to justify their poor decision-making, their lack of expertise and their outright hypocrisy; and minimize the years of hard work by real subject matter experts.

By equating athletic achievement with infallibility and transcendent heroism, we plant in the minds of successful athletes the idea that they are somehow wiser than the experts, blameless and above the rules. everyone must respect.

Exalting athletes as heroes and role models dehumanizes them and increases the likelihood that we will ignore anything that casts a negative light on them. In this world where athletes are also asked to be militant sports models, we sometimes forget that they are humans who must be reminded of the extent of their exposure and of their influence.

It doesn’t matter whether a professional athlete wants to be a role model or not. The company only asks these influencers to keep the low bar of being an honest and good human being.

While athletes should be applauded for their accomplishments and their work ethic, they should not be used as a moral compass. In a world where people are bombarded with content, and therefore easily swayed by the court of public opinion, we have a responsibility to demand that our athletes refrain from fooling people and leave the little details behind, especially when it comes to health, to those who know better.

The value of expert advice

In building our own sports narrative, we sometimes forget that athletes are fallible creatures, who put a lifetime of work, and often their physical and mental health, on the line for our amusement. Asking for a higher level of righteousness and wisdom than we demand of one another is unfair and disappointing.

We need to reconsider the value we place on athletes’ health opinions and accept that when it comes to health, not all opinions are created equal.

You wouldn’t let a plumber do open heart surgery because blood flows through veins and arteries like water in pipes. Yes, some athletes may have a basic understanding of science or have friends in the field with whom they can share ideas, but their level of expertise falls far short of the information needed to provide medical advice.

Science is far from intuitive. Its practical application goes beyond a basic understanding of the body, which is why it requires years of continuous learning, understanding and practice. When we take inspiration from athletes, we undermine years of hard work by health and public health professionals.

Athletes play an important role in society. We want our kids to train like Rodgers, speak out against social injustices like Irving, and be as positive as Kane, but under no circumstances should we take our health advice from them, or any athlete.

Another eco-friendly addition to the Kia lineup is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Sorento sport utility vehicle (SUV), which has been completely redesigned for the 2021 model year, offering both gasoline and hybrid powertrains. In addition, the Forte and Stinger sedans have undergone slight but noticeable improvements.

For 2022, Kia is adopting a new brand logo and continues to offer something for everyone in its diverse lineup of cars and SUVs, minus the premium K900 and Cadenza sedans (Kia has discontinued both models beyond 2021 ). Other changes to individual models are listed below.

The all-new Kia Carnival replaces the long-standing Sedona minivan with a new name, a new design and, finally, everything in between. Kia says it is a multipurpose vehicle (MPV). Whether you call it that or not, there’s no denying the Carnival’s bolder appearance and more powerful V6 powertrain, delivering 290 horsepower and 3,500 pounds of towing capacity.

The Carnival is roomier and more upscale than the Sedona, offering 2nd row Slide-Flex seating and VIP Lounge seating. And there’s more cargo space to support camping adventures and long road trips. The Carnival also has 12 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), including the segment-exclusive Blind Spot Monitor.

Changes Kia EV6 2022

The all-new 2022 Kia EV6 (CUV) crossover is the brand’s first dedicated battery-electric vehicle (BEV), marking the launch of the automaker’s global electrification strategy.

The rear-wheel or dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) EV6 CUV gets its power from a high-density 77.4 kWh battery allowing up to 300 miles of driving between charges. According to Kia, its 800-volt multi-charge architecture enables fast 10-80% DC charging in under 18 minutes. In terms of performance, the EV6 can go from zero to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

This technological tour de force offers an optional augmented reality head-up display, 21 standard active ADASs and Vehicle-to-Charge functionality. And the interior is as spacious as it is upscale, with a flat floor that offers 53.5 cubic feet of space with the rear seats folded down.

Three years after its last complete redesign, the 2022 Forte compact sedan benefits from several upgrades, including new design cues at the front and rear, a new 10.25-inch panoramic navigation screen and a cluster Larger 4.2-inch color TFT LCD screens are standard on all trim levels. . The Kia Rio will return for the 2022 model year, but no information on changes or new packaging has been provided as we prepared this article for release.

The Kia Seltos SUV arrives for model year 2022 with more standard technology and a menacing new version Turbo Nightfall Edition AWD with exclusive 18-inch matte black alloy rims, a unique black grille, sturdy roof racks and sills lateral.

At the front of ADAS, Front Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Attention Warning, Lane Keeping Assist track and high beam assist are standard throughout the Seltos range. Plus, a 10.25-inch navigation screen, UVO connectivity, remote engine start, and automatic climate control are standard features on all trims except the LX trim. For 2022, the new Sorento PHEV joins the gasoline and hybrid models, which Kia launched the year before. Highlights of the PHEV include a 261 hp turbocharged powertrain, 79 MPGe rating, rugged all-wheel drive capability and the largest passenger room in its market segment.

“All of my hybrid courses were originally in person, but once positive cases started to be reported, we switched to the hybrid,” Bonham said. “Although my classes are hybrid, I still attend classes in person, but I think this is useful for students who cannot attend in person. “

Nicholas has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, according to a 10 p.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

When you open the September issue of Rider of the west, you will see the beautiful couple of Daci and Miles Baker, who live in Mountain Park, Oklahoma, on their family’s Rockin ‘B Ranch. Miles, Daci and the breathtaking backdrop of the Wichita Mountains create the perfect backdrop for the annual clothing photoshoot. But we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize the horse who also modeled for the photos.

You will see a Flying B mark on some of the horses’ cheeks and will frequently see the name Trevor when you read about each horse. This is because Miles and Trevor Brazile are business partners: they breed, buy, train and sell team horses roping under the company name Relentless Remuda. There are two cohesive elements in the horses owned by Miles and Trevor – talent and good looks – and we certainly capitalized on both for this photoshoot.

“TRACK”

Brand New Step, better known as “Track,” was a perfect palomino model for the photoshoot. The 5-year-old gelding literally shone in the arena as Miles walked towards him for some action shots. Miles and Trevor plan to show off and spend time herding on Runway before it is sent out for horse sale at Rancho Rio in Wickenburg, Ariz. In March.

At only 6 years old, Hard Rey, aka “Sancho”, has already seen the world a lot and garnered a lot of attention. Miles bought Sancho from his father, Darren, and is now Trevor’s partner on the gelding. Miles had great success with him in the Ranch Horse Association of America show competitions before letting Daci show it to him. Sancho’s good nature and talent as a heel horse impressed Trevor enough to take him to the Lazy E Arena earlier this year for the Bob Feist Invitational, a big venue for a 6-year-old.

Miles’ dad, Darren, got on MCR Zacks Up aka “Concho” when we shot a few scenes in their pasture with the Wichita Mountains behind us. The cool 7 year old gray gelding sports a Flying B on the cheek from when it was owned by Trevor. In 2020, hooker Joseph Harrison was the American Rope Horse Futurity Association Reserve World Champion on Concho.

The 11-year-old Hez All Tricked Out, “Trick”, is a lead horse for Daci and Trevor’s son, Treston. Trick’s resume includes a National Circuit Finals Steer Roping Championship with Trevor in 2019. He’s a great all-around gelding that the Bakers and Braziles really love to have on the ranch.

Everyone knows and loves this beautiful old building. We have for decades. And we all wait patiently for the city to save him.

Over the years, countless artists have made their interpretations of the small gas station with world-class architecture.

But recently a viewer told us he saw a model of Barnsdall station in an old Model Railroader magazine! This we had to see… ..

Without much effort, we found it and ordered a copy ASAP. It was an April 1979 Model Railroader magazine.

The author, Carl Jacobsen, describes how he stumbled upon the train station one day and had no idea what it was. He slipped through the barbed wire fence, through the tall grass, and found an old receipt book on the ground. A “crumpled carbon copy” indicated that on October 21, 1934, Rio Grande Oil Inc. had sold 23 gallons of gasoline to Perkins Cement Co. for 14 cents per gallon. It was then that the author realized that it was an old gas station….

One of the great advantages of this article was that it provided several photos of the old station in 1979. Obviously, it was in much better condition than it is now. The author continues to say that he contacted the famous historian of Santa Barbara, Walker Tompkins, and that he learned all about the history of the building.

In the back, the author looks over the 5-foot wall and sees “old oil cans, rusty mufflers and worn tires.” Look what shape the tiles were in back then!

He took a can of oil home to copy the company’s brand to the model he was going to make for his train. He said he was going to make it the “mysterious Spook House” of his layout….

He must have spent a lot of time there, as it gives a lot of detail about the building and its surroundings, with exact measurements and beautiful drawings of every little thing.

Fun to see what was still around the property in 1979.

Then comes a very informative walk on how to build it and the materials it recommends.

The author really studied every detail to build his model, and he even pokes fun at the construction workers who built the station, pointing out several mistakes. But end by saying that this little station could be the “shining jewel” of your model railroad network.

All in all a fun find on a local treasure and some great photos of its condition in 1979.

Shortly after receiving the magazine, I saw this photo in a Facebook post! I contacted the poster, Pam Dudash, and she explained to me that her brother Mike Dudash had built it from scratch using resin.

So I spoke to Mike and learned that he was using this same magazine article for dimensions. Quite a coincidence! He made about 20 of them and sold them all over town. This is just another example of how much people love this old building and how important it is to save it!
