Mattel Creations Launches More “Collaborative” Products
Thomas the Tank Engine, but turning it into art.
Later this week, Mattel Creations is releasing âthe Collaboratory,â a second set of four iconic Mattel toys that have been given a makeover by contemporary artists.
This wave of collaborations features a Hot Wheels truck created by surfer, actor and designer Evan Mock. This 1:64 scale Toyota 1987 âNorth Shore Editionâ pickup features some of Mock’s iconic design cues, including an attached surfboard. The die-cast truck will cost $ 30.
Next, a Masters of the Universe pendant from jewelry designer Kristopher Kites. This iridescent Orko piece costs $ 150 and is designed to be worn or displayed, with a detachable chain and luminous base.
Stylist and fashion blogger Aleali May started styling her childhood Barbie doll, and now she’s creating an exclusive Barbie collection in this Mattel Creations collaboration. For $ 55, collectors can get doll-sized cargo pants, a bodysuit, knee-high boots, a t-shirt, and sunglasses designed by May.
Finally, artist Blue the Great – known for his murals and graffiti-style paintings – gives his own take on Thomas the Tank Engine. This die-cast Thomas collectible figure ($ 30) features colorful bubble letters on the side that state “Blue” and other creative details.
These four limited edition artistic collaborations will be available exclusively at Mattel Creations, starting at 9:00 a.m. PT on December 3. For now, collectors can preview items here! You can also consult this video to learn more about each artist and their creations.
