Mattel launches first-ever carbon-neutral toys, including a Tesla Matchbox
(Gray News) – Mattel is taking a first step towards its goal of achieving 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials in all of its products and packaging by 2030.
In a press release, the company announces that it has launched its first set of carbon-neutral toys.
These toys include the MEGA BLOKS Green Town, which the company says is the first ever line of toys available in retail to be CarbonNeutral certified.
Four new MEGA BLOKS Green Town building sets are releasing this month.
Mattel said it is releasing carbon neutral toys as part of its Matchbox line as well as as part of its Driving Toward a Better Future product roadmap. The first in this line of toys is the Tesla Roadster, the company’s first carbon-neutral die-cast vehicle made from 99% recycled materials.
To help take this step, the brand purchased carbon offsets from the Darkwood Forest Conservation Project in Canada.
Carbon offsets allow companies to take actions, such as protecting a forest, so that carbon emissions are offset.
Some climate experts criticize this action saying that fossil fuels are still used in the creation of toys.
