New grocery store opens in the UK offering big-name brands up to 60% off
Swedish grocery store Motatos has officially launched in the UK, offering customers up to 60% off renowned brands such as Heinz, Cadbury, Kellogg’s, Walkers and Typhoo. Motatos sells well-known long-life food and household essentials that might otherwise end up in landfill due to packaging changes, seasonal changes or short best-before dates.
The retailer partners with distributors and passes products on to customers at discounted rates, making Motatos a sustainable and cost-effective way to do your weekly shopping. A third of all food produced is never eaten.
In the UK, government data shows that around 9.5 million tonnes of food waste is produced in a single year. This makes food waste responsible for 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By buying with Motatos, consumers reduce the amount of food ending up in landfill and therefore reduce their carbon footprint.
And with the cost of living crisis affecting millions of people across the UK, Britons can still buy the household names they love without breaking the bank. Motatos founder Karl Andersson said: “We are really excited to be launching in the UK at this stage of our development. There are so many opportunities here for consumers to be able to help reduce waste while lowering their weekly expenses, which means they don’t have to choose between price and environmental awareness. Shopping with Motatos is good for the planet and good for the wallet.
More than 20,000 people have already registered on a waiting list – 20 times more than expected by Motatos. Christabel Biella, Country Manager of Motatos UK, said: “The cost of living crisis is affecting all sectors and UK shoppers are looking for ways to cut their monthly spend without jeopardizing all the brands they love. With prices soaring, Motatos hopes to make a real difference to consumers by offering savvy savings, empowering them to be sustainability conscious and reduce waste. It’s a win-win.
